Exponential increases in mobile voice and data usage are driving a need for more coverage and system capacity, which requires a shift from macro towers to 4G HetNets and ultimately 5G. Unlike macro towers, HetNets are more numerous and must be sited close to subscribers; which means municipal leaders are encountering increased resident feedback about aesthetic issues and concerns about possible negative impacts to property values. As 4G HetNet deployments continue, and 5G becomes a reality, the need for better cooperation between the wireless industry and municipal governments has never been greater. In late 2018 the IEEE Future Networks team approved the creation of the 5G Deployment Working Group - which is tasked with ensuring the aesthetic needs of municipal governments regarding wireless equipment is understood by hardware vendors and their product managers.

This IEEE SCV ComSoc panel will bring the co-chairs of the IEEE 5G-DWG to the stage to examine the problem and possible solutions from the perspectives of both the industry and municipal government.

"Zero-Trust Cybersecurity: Trust No One?"

Host: VALB
Location: Hauck Auditorium, David and Joan Traitel Building, Hoover Institution, 435 Lasuen Mall, Stanford, CA 94305
Time: 6:00-8:30PM
Moderator: Randy Wood, Vice President, Public Sector, Akamai Technologies
Panelists: TBD
Registration: here. $25-$55. (Early bird until 3/19)

Description:
Protecting digital assets is becoming harder and harder, for one alarming reason: most organizations have poorly prepared for the deluge of cloud-based applications and end-point devices. This transformation has created vulnerabilities well beyond any corporate-controlled environment, expanding the potential for data breaches into completely unchartered territory.

As the enterprise perimeter dissolves, cybersecurity today must extend beyond simply protecting on-premises data. Anyone authorized to have access to data and applications should have the flexibility of using any device, on any network, from any location. This ever-increasing desire for seamless access has created a corresponding need for end-to-end security across a myriad of applications, data centers, and devices. The cost of failing to do so is potentially huge. According to a recent study sponsored by IBM, the average cost of a single data breach is over $3 million.

Originally conceived by Forrester, the “zero-trust” model has been gaining momentum, from Google’s BeyondCorp to Gartner’s Continuous Adaptive Risk and Trust Assessment (CARTA). If implemented properly, zero-trust has the power to transform the industry.

-What are the implications of default-deny?
-Will micro-segmentation and software-defined perimeters offer enough protection?
-Is zero-trust security destined to become mainstream?

"Digital Predistortion of Broadband Amplifiers for Cable Access"

Host: IEEE ComSoc SCV
Location: Texas Instruments Building E Conference Center, 2900 Semiconductor Dr. Santa Clara, CA 95052
Time: 6:30-8:45PM
Speaker: Qian Yu, Maxim Integrated Products
Registration: here. Free.

Description:
Next generation cable infrastructure, e.g. full-duplex DOCSIS, requires broadband RF amplifiers with high output power and good linearity.

It is difficult to meet the requirement even with GaN devices. Digital predistortion (DPD) has been proposed as a potential solution.

However, DPD for cable access is quite different from the DPD technique commonly used in wireless base stations. There are interesting issues, such as the Giga Hertz bandwidth and the BER performance.

7:00 - 8:00 PM Talks
8:00 - 8:30 PM Panel Session
